The Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez, who is now playing for the Brazilian club Gremio, is considering retirement due to constant pain in his knee as reported by the Brazilian media.
Suarez, 36, is relying on injections in order to continue playing and is now reaching his limit as he feels constant pain, according to the Gremio’s president Alberto Guerra.
Guerra addressed the seriousness of Suarez's condition, suggesting that the 36-year-old striker might need to consider a knee prosthesis as a potential solution. Suarez has already undergone multiple injections and tried various medications, but it remains uncertain how much more his knee can withstand.
“Luis Suarez is reaching his limit, to be able to play he is given almost daily injections and special treatments, he feels constant pain," he said.
The 36-year-old footballer has a contract with the Brazilian club until 2024, but considering the recent condition of the Uruguayan's knee, there will be meetings between the club and the player regarding his future.
Suarez is Gremio's top scorer this season with 14 goals in 26 games but the knee injury could mean an early retirement for the legendary striker, who previously enjoyed successful spells at Barcelona, Liverpool and Ajax.
Rumours have also circulated about Suarez's potential move to Inter Miami, a Major League Soccer (MLS) team, where he could reunite with his former teammate and close friend, Lionel Messi. However, any decisions about Suarez's future will depend on his ability to manage the pain and find suitable treatments for his knee injury.
The 36-year-old has played 741 games throughout his career where he scored 457 goals and had 251 assists. He enjoyed European glory with FC Barcelona in 2015 after joining the club in 2014 from Liverpool.
El Pistolero guided Barca to a title win in the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League (UCL) where he scored seven goals and assisted three times including a goal in the final against Juventus, which Barca won 3-1, winning the fifth UCL in the club’s history.
